Skating 2012 Year Recap!!

I have to say that 2012 has come and gone too fast.and so much has happened  This year indeed had its challenges, ups and downs yet bitter sweet; Survived my hubby's heart attack, my dad's passing and my mom moving to Florida. I was diagnosed with a brain abnormality back in March which will limit me to my skating but it will not stop me!  Have to be very careful and try to avoid any head injury, and the least spins I perform on the ice is for the best.  I don't need to get a seizure or a brain stroke on the ice.

May 12, 2012
I landed my axel on Mother's day, Yahooo!!! I do have to work on it and get it higher and clean!! Its a working progress :) but I am happy with it.

Then,
To my excitement - was featured in the USFS Magazine June issue "Adult Corner" thanks to my blog post "The Test", where I mentioned that Ashley Wanger was my inspiration to begin my testing and future with USFS.  I was truly honored.  I have to give special thanks to all my followers and readers of my blog because your support and comments really encourage me to keep writing and share my skating journey.

I managed to stick to my 2012 goals and test and passed both MIF and FS Adult Pre-Bronze.  Competed at ISI National competition which was not my best skate. At one point I decided to give up on competing completely, but I had a change of heart and  vowed to improve and better myself and sure said done.

Had no choice but to upgrade to new boots and blades some how all this time I've been skating with the wrong size blade and boots lol.  Though the skates that I purchased were Harlicks, they were *used* but for a good price they work just fine.  When you're in financial situation, have to make due with what ever comes your way.   To be honest it was a nightmare, with blisters, falls and just pure torture trying to break them in, in a short note I love my skates.

Decided to compete again in October and give it one more try and redeem myself and I skated great! My jumps and elements have gotten much better, seen a big difference in my skating.  Had some minor injuries that still need healing but not so bad that I have to stop skating.

Now training hard for 2013 Skating Season and prepare for Sectionals which I am so excited yet nervous since this will be my very first USFS competition - praying and hoping for the best.  Also, gearing up for my next test Adult Bronze and hope for a pass.

So blessed to have met such amazing friends aka adult skaters via my blog and facebook - its funny how we have so much in common and share the same dreams and goals.  I am so thankful to the Lord for giving me this opportunity to live my dream and to share my thoughts with all of you.

My last lesson for the year is next week Thursday.   Would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year and Peach, Happiness and Prosperity for 2013!!

On A Quick Note:  Never give up! There will be times where it will be hard and you feel that you want to give up....no! don't listen to that "drunken monkey" positive mindset will over come your "fears" Fear not but Fear Itself, and always remember "Failure is not an Option, its a Choice"

Blessings to you and a Happy New Year!!

Skating with Friends Near and Far

Skating Today!!
I have to say that today was a wonderful day! Had the amazing opportunity to meet and skate with a few fellow *adult* skaters!  I met two new friends for the first time though we've communicated via facebook, It was a true blessing to see them in person they came all the way from Tampa and Ocala.

We skated on an almost empty rink and must say it was a great skate. Skating with adult skaters is great because we can all relate to our challenges and level.  We exchanged pointers and dislikes on the jump or spin we dread the most lol.  Teresa actually gave me some encouragement on my flip jump(which I screwed up), while she watched me skate my program she said
Quote of the Day:  "come on Diana you can do it"

these words were repeated in my mind over and over!! This I am so grateful for thank you Teresa.  Have to say that will have to do this again in the near future !!  Thank you Heather, Amy and Teresa for coming and skate with me. Oh PS: Amy you have an awesome lutz jump by the way !!

Did work on my program which I am feeling most confident every session....its a great feeling to skate clean and land some decent jumps (except my flip) its a hit or miss at its best today.  Trying to cope with this pain I've been having my right hip - have my good days and bad.  I found that when I stretch before I skate it doesn't hurt as much.

Well, I am off to my next blog post....Happy Skating, Peace and Merry Christmas to ALL!!

Accelerate with Off Ice

December 13, 2012

World and International Coaches highly recommend doing off ice training!!
Performing off ice and warm ups before practice helps accelerate your performance.  Skaters achieve results faster and stronger when they continue doing off ice practice on a regular basis.  Some rinks provide classes and/or training but if your rink does not provide it, you can try and do some off ice at home, but ask your coach first before doing it on your own.  Your coach will show you what jumps practices to work on.  With practice and keeping it consistent you will achieve:

Higher Jumps and Rotations
Speed and Endurance
Flexibility and Balance

I make it a routine to work on my jumps etc. on a  weekly basis.  I like this video, off ice has helped me significantly for sure.  One thing to keep in mind is that when you do jump rotations off ice, you are on a stand still oppose to when skating the jump you are gliding.  I try to warm up right before my lesson by doing some jump rotations, and stretching this will loosen muscles by doing this you'll avoid muscle injury etc. on the ice.

Today's Lesson:
I did have a good lesson, however, skated a run through of my free skate and 1.40 min I was out of breath something is wrong, I am completely out of shape -even though I skate -  I am definitely out of shape hmmm some how this does not make sense.  I have to find way to skate without running out of breath.  I don't want to any exercise that will make me loose weight, in fact I need all the weight I can for health purposes.

Overall on a good note:  My jumps are improving nicely and my MIF are much quieter and smooth.  Gearing up for my next test coming up soon in Feb 2013.   I think I'm ready, but I don't want to feel over confident and then I don't pass.
A Merry Christmas to All

Videotaping And Skating

For Me:
I remember when I first started skating, my daughters asked me "mom what do you want for your birthday?" I said, "besides a Zuca bag. I want a cheap camera with video capabilities."  I really like to video tape myself whether its a practice session or its a competition, for me its a learning experience because it gives me the chance to watch myself skate and see what I am doing wrong and correct it.

Also like to receive the feed back from other skaters such as advice and tips on what I can improve in future. Sometimes, its capturing a moment when you finally landed that one jump you were trying for a *gazillion* time or the dreaded spin that has been *haunting* you for the longest and finally!! you go it and its on tape for validation!!!  I tend to watch my videos over and over, no matter how old they are.  I say what ever works for you as to improving your skating skills is a good thing.

Friends:
I have gotten some positive response from videotaping. Since I have been positing my videos, a few of my adult skating friends like the idea of videoing themselves as well.  So, now they have told me that they're going to start doing the same thing. This will give them the opportunity to view their moves and elements on tape and do the same.

Coaches:
My coach and same as others like to tape their students for the same reason. My coach likes to video my skating especially a week or two before testing - she will point out exactly the area I am not getting right.  Also the coach and student can review the performance as wells as technique, posture etc. and discuss as to how and what needs to be done for correctness.

Me during an early morning practice session....I said I will post my back spin and sit spin and here it is!! There is lots of room for improvement but I am very proud of my progress!!.

Like I said, what ever works for you to improve your skating, for me its videotaping myself....like the saying says "the proof is in the pudding"  Sometimes, others may say when you landed a jump "oh, good for you, where's the video?" they ask as curiosity and validation on their part. Well here it is...."on video"  I don't upload video to show off or brag about my skating its simply another tool for me to better my skating.  Keep skating and get those cameras rolling!!!

Happy Skating!

Coach & Choreographer

Practice today:
Skating today was great !! Finally my skating is back to normal.  I am so happy with my boots and blades.    My coach was very impressed with my skating....she has noticed a real improvement  in my overall skating.  I am so glad she told me this because now I know all my hard work finally is showing its light.

My Coach:
Since I started skating, I always had a coach. Coach Lynn is my coach for about 7 years I've been very fortunate.  Hiring a coach and connecting and/or click is most important.  With a coach will come one on one techniques, moves, jumps, testing and competitions. He or she will train you, push you to your limit and what your body can perform at the same time provide a safety net - that us adult skaters need.  My coach is not just a coach she is my best friend.  She has molded me to the skater I am today.  From competitions to testing....she is strict and tough indeed, but for good reasons.  She's taught me power, discipline and patience.  She only expect the best from me and respect of  the sport.  She will not put me out there whether its a test or competition without full confident of myself and my skating "her name is on the line" !!  I listen to all her tips and advice for this is why I am where I am in my skating today!!

Choreographer?
I did however, hire coach Jill in the beginning to middle of this year along with Lynn, her main focus was getting me ready for MIF and testing - coach Jill is one of the best in her field.  But, it has come to a point in my skating that requires more coaching and ice time!!! With testing and competition its is time for another coach who can help me with my programs and competitions.  Finding a coach with the right time slot and availability is hard to come by.  The majority of all the coaches at our rink are already booked.  So, coach had mentioned that I should look into speaking with coach Alex for choreography for my free skate and artistic programs.  Coach Alex and Lynn is also coach Christina, so I feel really comfortable with this transition.

Having coach Alex as a choreographer will be a plus to my program(s).  I am so use to being in my comfort zone, however, this will be a challenge for me since I am so used to my coach but I am thrilled to have such a well-known, talented and an awesome skater - you can say that he is "fierce".  I hope that I can keep up with his skating and teaching - remember; "I am no spring chicken"  My issue is finding a balance and at the same time will I be able to connect.  I am I ready? that is the question..

I can't wait to get started and see how my progress and performance in my skating comes to pass.  Will keep everyone posted on my progress.

Happy Skating

Finally my Flip jump

In the few years of my skating, I was always going and going wondering when the next spin will happen,  when will I land that jump.  The anxiety of it all is a bit stressing not mention the worrying about the next test level or competition.  I watched Skate Canada last week and what an inspiration watching the best of best on the Ice.  I dream of skating like that one day!! only in my dreams...who knows.

Today's Practice/Lesson
Jumps:
I've been at it with the Flip jump for almost 2 years now and finally LANDED!  I did a few of them, some were semi-good but one was good enough for me!!! Its a huge accomplishment for me because I've been working so hard and now I am actually seeing my results, Thank You, Lord!

Coach had me work on Free Skate program and combination jumps today: loop/loop,  loop/1/2 loop/Sal and Waltz/Loop/loop it will take time to master but its good practice and will give me the most points in competition!

Spins:
Though my doctor told me to don't over do it with spins, I am cautious!!
Camel spins did about 7 revolution yippy!!.  Backspin are much better quiet and smooth.  These *blades* some how like backspins hehehe!!!  It's so funny, because about a month ago, I was literally cursing my blades and today, love, love them!!!

Quote of the day: "on the flip"
"remember, that your free leg (which is your toe pic on the ice) is not your jumping leg, its your skating leg, that's going to vault you up in the air"  RC

When my friend told me this - it was so hard to visualize, until today!!! and it is so correct!! the skating foot has to glide back with strong knee bend in upward motion while your toe pic is on the ice yep!!!  Now I have a different perspective when it comes to the Flip!!

On a Short Note:
On the Ice:
Work on backspins consistently, back double 3s and salcows these elements is the "key" to your Flip jump.

Off Ice:
Standing in one position and with your left arm in front and right back, you want to hop on your right foot and at the same time bring your left foot into a "4" position (foot over your right shin) and jump/hop bringing arms together.

Hard work, persistence and determination don't give up!!  I still have a lot to work do with my flip but its not  stopping me!!!

No Rush

November 1, 2012
Skating today was a successful one indeed!!

Finally my skating is back to normal - actually getting use to my blades and more comfortable with my skating position and center core.  I just want to say a special thanks to all my skating peeps for all your advice and support!!

Quotes of the day:
A good friend of mine told me "I decided not to *rush* my skating and I am in a good place and content with my training"  by AWM

"5 minute barrier time for working on elements that you aspire to do; example: for me it is spread eagle so time at the barrier taking each part at my own pace until I feel ready to try it on open ice and build on it" by RC

Spins update:
I did some real nice camels with good revolution "5" Yeah!! and sit spins trying to center and get a little lower without straining my lower back - slowly but surely.  Also, initiated some good back spins - so happy!!.

Jump attempt:
Manage to land 2 nice loop/loop jumps which is a difficult jump because its on a back outside edge and you have to ride the edge and jump in a back spin position.

Practice Session:
This was a eye opening moment for me, because today I decided not to *rush* my skating and just focus on my elements; MIF, stroking making sure my edges and leg extensions are in sync.  There after I moved to my jumps; decided to just work on my entry for my flip jump: FLI edge w. FLO3turn and just hold it and jump up (no turning) this will help me get the control I need.

I have a new outlook for my future skating as well as my new mindset "No Rush" there will always be ice time, and there will always be days where you need a break, but never RUSH your skating, take your time, testing can wait and competitions will come and go....Don't dwell on a bad skate or a re-try on a test, take it one day at a time and don't rush it....lesson learned!!

Monster Mash ISI Competition Recap

October 22, 2012
I have to say! this weekend was awesome!! I manage to skate my two programs very well. All my skating dresses have been put away and all the hard work really paid off!!! The falls and bruises I sustained these pass couple of months is my badge of honor.  I will never trade it for anything else...keep skating and don't stop.

Competition Recap:
Decisions:
Coach decided to take out my flip jump because its was under-rotated.  I have to admit that when she first told me that, I felt like a knot on my throat.  I said to myself, "I worked so hard to get this jump and now I can't skate it in my program"  We sat down and she explained to me how it works: 1. If she would have left it in, it would have gotten marked down with deductions. 2. We substituted with a jump sequence right after a spiral. Why?  well, you'll get more points for the execution of the combination and doing it from a spiral edge.

Overall it was the best decision - I skated well and I didn't have to worry about not landing my flip. Sometimes, its in the back of your head and there is like a mental fear just when you're approaching your  entry....its a terrible feeling when you have to rethink yourself:  Its the "should I? or should I not do the jump"?

Open Silver Program:
Happy that my blades did smile on me today! There was some little mistakes but I can work on them.
I skated my artistic program yesterday and I must say it was so beautiful to skate to that song "I get chills just listening to it" yet alone to skate to it.  I got first place!! I loved every minute of it.  I receive lots of compliments on my dresses.

It was so nice to be around all my skating friends and watch them skate cheer them on.  Everyone did an awesome job!! and had a great time, the outfits/costumes were stunning as always.

Saturday, October 20th 6:02 pm
Artistic Program: First Place
Free Style 4
Program 1.30 min
Music: At last by Etta James
Artistic Program
Sunday, October 21st 10:30 am
Open Silver Free Style
Level 4
Program: 2.0 min
Music: The feeling begins by Peter Gabriel
Open Sliver Free Style 4
Skate to the Book:
I did however, skate against the book but it doesn't mean that you'll get "first place".  The judges will take your program apart and they will determine if you earned first place.

Judges Criteria:
1. Correctness
2. Variety of moves
3. Choreography and Pattern of the program
4. Music interpretation, Posture and  Presentation.

Sometimes making a decision that maybe you might not agree, it is for the best!! and  I am so glad that we did.  To have a great coach that looks out for you and your performance is a blessing.  Always listen to your coach, whether you might think you want and can do an element, your coach knows and understands how the judging system works.  I know she made the right decision for me and my skate.  Thank you Coach Lynn.

What is up with these blades?

October 12, 2012

Today's Skating Session Recap:
I am happy to report that finally my blades are cooperating.  It was a bit frustrating for the past couple of days, and to be honest at one point I felt like crying.  Well, simply because I've practiced all summer and came so far to have this issue happen.  I guess it comes with the territory eventually you'll have to upgrade to new boot and/or blades in some point in time.

I did have a good skate and did something that a friend and an amazing skater advised me to  this technique; to try and help me get the proper feel of my blades to achieve that "sweet spot"  I will continue skating next week and focus on my upper body core and balance, it so important.  To think a change of 1/4" inch made such a huge difference in my skating.  It has taught me that I have listen to my skating!!

On a short note:
Thank you all my skating peeps who always give such great advice when it comes to my skating.

Quote of the day:
"If you have a different blade, skate backwards and slightly go on your toes where you can feel exactly how much more close or far away your toe pick is compared to old blades" by BJones

Happy Skating

October 9, 2012

On a short note:
Practice session went pretty well today - did my run through of both programs and I must say I am totally out of shape - what? even though I skate? yes, I do off ice and still I am out of shape.  Skated my 2.0 min program and I was completely out of breath. What can I do to improve on my breathing?  Help?

What is wrong with me or these blades?
It has been two weeks now that I decided to purchase some used skates and blades from my coach.  Was it a mistake? No, I don't think so, I really love my Harlicks (which I did not pay $700 for) and I can say that about these darn blades (John Wilson Coronation Ace) I was told by Coach Brian that these are "really good" blades but some how they don't like me or I don't like them!!!

FYI:
I found after 3 1/2 years of skating 1. I was skating with the wrong size boot and 2. the wrong size blade 9 1/2 as oppose to 9 1/4 inch blade.  How did I manage to skate I don't know.  So here I am with 9 1/4 blade and it seems very difficult to get use to short blades.  I have noticed that my sit and camel spins are really bad, cannot seem to get my center on my ball - guess because I was so use to skating with a larger blade.  However, I have noticed a smoother glide on my edges and definitely improved on my jumps, it's just the spins that is actually hindering my skating especially with a competition coming up next week  eeekkkk!

Quote of the day:
A good friend and a coach told me "pay extra attention to what feels right"  She tells her students and myself to do this "go to the boards and find the blades "sweet spot" that smooth spinning spot.  "Press on toward the front and slowly turn from side to side until it feels like a knife cutting through butter" by CP

It is very important whether you're are just learning to spin or just changed blades this is a learning process for me because this is my very first time with new blades.  I am definitely trying this technique at my next session.  You yourself know your body and your skating, listen to your skating you know what sounds right and something is not right.  Don't hesitate to talk to others or your coach there might be something that might need adjusting.  My coach told me that If I continue with this issue, my blade might need to be adjusted.

Happy Skating!!

Competing this season!!

Today's Practice:
I must say that my lesson today was a productive one. Worked on MIF for the next upcoming test session and worked on program(s) for competition.  I've been working and training since summer, and I feel I am ready, there is some areas that I can work on but some how my coach is debating whether I should test or not this time around or is she just trying to push me to work harder, hmmm maybe?.  I should go for it whether I pass or re-test!! - it will be a learning experience and will help me to work on what needs correcting.
Question: How would we know where we are lacking if we don't take that chance and go for it?

First Season Competition:
YES, I decided to face my fears and admit to myself that its okay if I had a bad skate this year!! I can't seem to understand why I am so hard on myself.  Doesn't mean I am a bad skater and sometimes we have our days. Even the best of best elite skaters have bad days and not so good competition outcome.  It doesn't define who or what kind of skater I am, simply to analyze my performance and focus on what is lacking. I am hoping that with summer practices will surface at this upcoming competition.  I won't set my expectations high, just in case - I will skate and do my very best and move on "Que sera, sera"

My friend quoted this "If you give it your all and do your
best, your best is always the best" by SMD.

Artistic:
My music is from Etta James "At Last" I am skating this piece for my hubby.  I hoping and praying that he comes and see me skate, oh yes!! he doesn't like coming to the rink and sit for hours, it not his cup of tea.  He rather pay and see it on video, but this one special one for me.  However, if this program turns out to be a good one its a keeper for Adult Eastern Sectional 2013!

One Year Ago on Sept 27, 2011

It was a Monday night I was anxious and excited -  I was finishing up stoning my dresses, and had skated the last lesson before the big weekend.  Bags were packed already set to compete in Oldsmar FL the 2011 Adult National Championships that upcoming weekend.  Had no idea what was going to happen next!!!

It was close to midnight when my husband was feeling ill - he is one that does not like hospitals.  He told me he wasn't feeling well, he took an aspirin and went to bed.  And again, He got up said he was still not feeling well - we decided to go to the ER.  We didn't even sat in the waiting area and we were rushed in inside.  He had an electrocardiogram done and then the doctor approached me and said, "ma'm your husband is having a heart attack" I almost fainted. He was rushed to another room to prep him.  I went inside and saw him with all these tube and cables - next thing, I heard was the chopper!! I said what is that? "ma'm your husband needs immediate surgery - has to be airlifted right now to ORMC" I completely lost it!!!!  The worst thing was my two daughters were home and had no idea what was transpiring at this moment.  I couldn't even dial the phone, my hands were shaking so much.  The doctors had to give me something for my nerves, until I waited for someone to drive me to the other other hospital!! I thought my world was ending at that moment - everything was flashing in front of me - my life, my kids - "what am I going to do now!!!" and  "The what if???"  He had 3 (98%) blocked artery - the surgery went well and had 3 stents put in!!!  He was in ICU for 4 days.  A lot has happen and our lives changed forever!
PS: thank goodness he took that aspirin - it saved him enough time to get to the hospital

On a Short Note:
Don't take life for granted!!!! Always tell your love ones "I love you" you never know!!!!  It was a tough time for me coping. The life adjustment, the healing process, and the change of diet all for good reasons.  I felt a deep sense of guilt with me and skating.  I was confused, depressed and I didn't want to skate anymore.
He told me "go and skate and do what you love to do"  I love him dearly and I don't know what I would do without him.  I pray every day and give thanks to God for sparing his life.  I have to say thank you to all my family and friends who prayed and gave me the support my family and I needed in that time.

No Competition, No Medal comes close to what I received
Golden Prize "Life" !

Now Comes Free Skate

September 3, 2012
I am SO excited that finally after passing my adult pre-bronze MIF and adult pre-bronze free skate this summer was such an accomplishment.  As I move forward with my skating goals, now I have to focus on putting together a Free Skate program with the help of my Coach(s).

I trained hard this whole summer to correct my skating performance in the ISI Conference Championships competition back in May. To be quite honest it was not my best performance due to the fact that I lost my dad 3 weeks prior and had just gotten my program together only 2 weeks before then and not to mention that my nerves got the best of me... well enough of the blame game....can't cry over spilled milk!! only have to clean it up....

I know... I've mentioned in my previous blog post that I was debating whether or not to compete anymore but the best thing of setting goals is that you can always change your mind.  There is a upcoming USFS Adult Eastern Sectional (non-qualifying) competition in 2013 that I've been wanting to compete in for quite sometime. Seriously I can't let this chance pass me by.

Adult Singles Standard Free Skate Program:
Adult Pre-Bronze (equivalent to ISI FS 1 - FS 4)

Music duration: 1.40
Single and 1/2 Jumps are permitted
Salcow = S
Toe loop = L
Waltz Jump = W (1/2 rev jump)
Flip = F
Loop = LO
1 Combination Jump:
any of the above jumps in combination(s)
No Axels or Lutz are permitted

Spins: (no flying spins are permitted)
Maximum: 2
Revolution: 3

I am looking forward to skating a program at my current level and at the same time get it ready for 2013.  If I'm not mistaken, (tell me if I am) since my test level is adult pre-bronze, I can skate up one level which is Bronze at local competitions but not sure about AES.  Only in Adult Nationals you have to compete at your current test level.  I am confident with both levels, however my goal is to compete from the bottom and move my way up as I progress in levels.  It might take some time to get there since USFS testing is a whole lot harder. I have to admit that I am indeed a rookie and new to this level of competition and requirements for IJS or 6.0 scoring system, I am sure with coaching, practice and confidence it will all pan out.

I will be updating this post frequently and will add my free skate program on video soon... Also will post my free skate dress that I am designing.   stay tuned...

Practice, Patience and Perseverance

Yesterday's Lesson: August 23, 2012

Practice:
I had a great lesson my MIF have improved significantly and I feel much more confident on the ice. Coach and I re-caped on salcows and Toe loops as well as the backspin/loop which we're working on a corrective entry and takeoff. Sort of like: a forward outside back pivot for the toe loop (take off) a strong backward left inside edge for my salcow (like a "C"), a bit different and hard to describe but this will set the tone for doubles jumps (no doubles yet).

I did manage to get low on my sit spin and my loop jumps are finally showing its light. My flip jump is another story for another day...It seems I am under-rotating, but with more practice, one day I will wake up and it will be a "light bulb moment"!! My determination will not stop, I'll continue to practice, practice!!

Haven't practiced on my axel jumps since I began testing USFS, I've had to put on hold my ISI Open Silver level elements and programs until all Adult Bronze testing is complete. Axel still needs to get a bit higher and more control of my arms, they seem to be all over the place (still working progress). I need to practice and focus on my testing the less distraction the better for my performance.

This video was taken May 13, 2012 my very first axel attempt
Patience:
In skating it seems that every entry whether its a spin or a jump a mohawk or 3 turn is involved. I have an appreciation for the 3 turns and mohawks they create not just entries for jumps and spins they give you style and grace when skating a program such as footwork or a dance sequence. Some skaters tend to have fear for these elements and even myself was always hesitant in my early years of skating.  As I've progressed in my skating, so has my form and presentation thanks to proper 3 turns and mohawks.  With patience anything is possible.  3 turns whether they are forward or backwards, they take a time and patience to master - just like we practice on our free style programs we cannot forget to practice these important elements as well.

Perseverance:
I haven't given up on my back 3s since they're Silver level moves and I am pleased to say that I am working really hard and get ready for my next testing level Adult Silver MIF in 2013.  My backward 3 turns and double back 3s for quite sometime now and actually they're not so bad.  If I can keep my momentum and persistence, I can implement my dbl 3s in a flowing movement in my Free Skate.

FYI:
The main focus is to put your back and/or shoulders to the outer part of the circle lobe, bend knee and turn same time with your arms.  I like to ride the edge and down and up then turn.

Backward 3 Turns:  I really like back 3 turns, though I need to get them clean and implement stronger knee bend and keep my free leg in front.
  • Backward left inside
  • Backward right inside
  • Backward left outside
  • Backward right outside
Keep going, focus and it will happen, not looking for perfection but sense of being an elite skater!!!

My 5 steps to a Jump:

I remember when passed my LTS class first thing I told my coach was "I wanted to do jumps".  My very first jump was my waltz jump in '07, wow!!  I really felt like a skater - was so excited when I landed that waltz jump, I can still remember even till today!!.

Whether you're are a beginner or an elite skater these 5 steps is the foundation to all jumps from Waltz jumps to doubles and triples.   I want to share these five elements with you because I am implementing them as I am learning new jumps in my journey.  I am not the best jumper!!  However, what ever tips that works I want to share with you.

There are two categories in jumps: 1. Edge Jump and 2. Toe Jump
Edge Jumps: Waltz, Salcow, Loop and the Axel
Toe Jumps: Toe Loop, Flip, and the Lutz

Remember:
If you follow these 5 steps in your skating, most importantly in your free skate program, it will help you achieve the GOE (grade of execution) get you the most points in your jumps - by the execution: pattern, position, take off, air position and the landing.

Lets look at it one by one:  (I will make it short and precise)
1. Pattern:  sometimes this element is omitted - but it is important to keep it in mind when starting your jump. What pattern will you be skating your jump: corner, axis or in a step sequence or in combination. This will determine your setup for the jump.

2. Position:   Correct position of your upper body (shoulders, arms and hands) as well as your skating foot is in the correct entry edge position before your take off.

3. Take Off:  the take off must be precise entry (never altered) correct entry edge (forward or backward 3s or mohawk etc.), strong knee bend and vault upward motion will give you rotation.

4. Air position:   when you have achieved the above three steps - here is where the rotation comes in. With the proper take off - you want to vault yourself up in the air and let your upper body and hip rotate, don't force the rotation - let physics do all the work for you.  Note: free leg and arms are cross in front (not to tight)  I am still working on that!!!

5. Landing: once you have executed your jump now its time for your landing.  Landing on an outside edge, strong knee bend and free leg well extended outwards.

I hope to shed some light to this topic - I am not a coach, merely a figure skater wanting to share my thoughts and experiences.  There is MUCH more to every jump and these are just some pointers to remember, consult with your coach when executing your jumps for safety reasons.  Note: If I missed anything or would like to share with me any of your pointers, please let me know.

Skating Season Begins

August 2012 to June 2013 marks the beginning of the next skating season for all those amazing, champions and elite skaters.  It's what  they've been training for months.   As for myself its just the same routine; practice, testing and most likely compete USFS Competitions in the local level.  Completely new territory for me competing USFS for the very first time will be challenging.  I've competed ISI for 6 1/2 years which it has helped me compete with confidence, mentally and emotional which will play a heavy role in this new endeavor of mine.

SO glad to be back at my home rink after a week off (vacation).  I was a bit rusty but after I warmed up, it felt real nice to be back.  Like the saying says; "with a good skate - you have to have some falls to make it right".

Unavoidable:

Of course, I manage to hit the ice a couple of times today.  Fell really hard on my flip jump that sucked the air out of me!! but got up and kept on going.  Fell on my sit spin trying to get lower and I landed on wrist and my left hip "not good", I thought I sprained it but no, its ok "I'll live" other than that, it was a good skate.

Today's recap:

We worked on my adult bronze moves of course. I practice these moves so much, that I see them in my dreams - geeez!!  My power 3s and pattern are real good just have to work on my down and up rise on my right and left mohawk sequence.
Finally:
My Free Skate - which I've been working really hard to get lower on my sit spin - its getting there but sometimes its so frustrating .  The back spin that I lost 2 years ago is showing its light.  Yes!!! finally my backspin is back!! even though its a hit or miss, but today it was a "HIT".

Test: Adult Bronze MIF
  • Forward and Backward Perimeter-Power Stroking
  • Forward Power 3 Turns
  • Alternating backward crossovers to backward outside edges
  • Foward Circle Eight
  • Five-step Mohawk Sequence
Test: Adult Bronze Free Skate
  • Three different single jumps: Salcow, Toe Loop,  Loop or Flip
  • One combination jump: waltz/toe loop jump
  • Back spin (3 rev)
  • Sit spin (3 rev)
  • Connecting moves, steps and edges, foot work

It's sad that summer is almost over!! I have to say, had a great summer.  Now my training and focus begins, testing is in the works.  Hope and praying for a Pass!!

Patience, Prayer and Perseverance is the Key to Success.

Who Would Ever Know

At Montebello, New York 2012 Family Reunion

What ended up being a semi-vacation and a family reunion with Floridians and Canadians ended up to be such a wonderful experience.  The family reunion was a success and got to be with family I haven't seen in years.

What was truly fascinating was the fact that 14 years ago, we had decided to go and spend the holidays with our family up North.  We wanted to do something different so we all decided to go skating.  There was a skating rink not to far from our relatives but the funny thing was I have never seen a skating rink inside a mall before and to me this was amazing!!!

Me and Christina
July 27, 2012
Here we are today skating at the Palisades Center Skating Rink "AGAIN" 14 years later - simply magical. This time around it was just me, Christina, Juliana and Nilsa (my sister).  The best part of all, the rink gave us an extra hour of  ice time "What"? that was really exciting, yeah!! more ice time!!!  Thank you so much Palisades Center Skating Rink!!!
Me and my daughters
Christina and Juliana
"Who Would Ever Know" that 14 years later I would be an adult figure skater as well as my daughter Christina (4 years old at that time) would grow up to be such an amazing skater.  Even though Juliana is not a figure skater, however, she loves DJ Skate and public session.  I've been teaching her forward and backward swizzles and crossovers which she is doing very well.  Her dream is to with all of us in a a group number in Spring Show 2013.

My Loves
Christina, Nilsa and Juliana
Skating always brings a smile to everyone no matter if its your very first time lacing up skates or you're a experienced skater, some how skating with the ones you love, makes it even more special.  Moments to cherish for ever!!  I must say this was the best vacation ever.

Enjoy Life!! Enjoy Family!!

Oooh those "Falls"

While I love skating - I've had plenty of falls in my years of skating; during practice, in competitions and even in shows!!  Even famous figure skaters have had their share of falls - some really serious ones if you ask me. In skating I believe that falling no matter how many times, it makes me a better skater!! Though I wear my marks and bruises with pride and dignity!!!

Falling is an automatic reaction to get up and keep skating the program or show much go on, even though I have a huge knot in my throat.  I hear the audience as they feel sorry for me (oooh...) then in a second or two is the clapping!! giving me the encouragement to keep going.  In major competitions or even in a test session a "Fall" means major deductions or automatic "fail" but for the skater it's a blow that hits you in the gut.

Not sure if this has ever happen to you, but it has happen to me!!! in front of everyone on the ice... I go step onto the ice and their I go - down like a bag of potatoes with "GUARDS" ON AND ALL!!!  Seriously!! total embarrassment.

I must say that we all have had our share of falls - how about the "Superman Dive" like in this video!!!

Pretty sure everyone has had the "throw pick dive" is when your skating like there is no one watching and their you go!! "toe pick" throws you across the other side of the rink...its so crazy because, after that everyone is like "hey are you ok" because, oh yeah "I am an old lady on the ice" I think I broke my knee" hahaha!!!

How about the "Landmark" of all falls the "Bonny Hop" yep!! can't forget those.  My worst of all are the falls from spins (sit and back scratch spins), doing my flip, axel and loop/loop jumps.

In a short note:  Please were your butt pads, knee pads, head gear for your protection while practice to bad can't wear them during competition.

Its your courage within that makes you keep going
not matter how many times or how hard you Fall!!

The "Back Scratch Spin" My Detriment

Just mention the word "backspin" to a skater and they will not tell no anything pretty in their experience.  Yes, the back spin (change of foot spin) and back scratch spin - its no doubt its everyone's nightmare one way or the other whether its FS 3 or adult bronze.  I thought I surpassed this element three years ago - but to my dismay - I am faced again and re-visited by this nightmare!! Now its worse 9 revolutions for my FS 5 test, no not 3 but 9!! Are you kidding me - this spin is my detriment to say the least.

I am pretty sure that some of you can relate to this element like a ______ ______ if you ask me.  Whether its the change foot spin or the back scratch!!! It is a very important matter - the back spin definitely is your loop and flip jump and the back scratch for sure is the element for your "Axel" rotation.

TIPS:
1.  Its a spin, where the entry is from a forward inside 3 turn into an back outside edge (which ever side you spin on) vis versa.
2.  once you execute your 3 turn, now you want to be tall & straight up in position like someone is pulling a string from your head
3.  Then the "snap" moment: is when you make the first rotation on the skating foot with your free leg out and "snap" or pull in your body same time with your free leg onto a back outside.
4.  When you spin the one rotation, you will feel a smooth quiet spin this is called "your sweet spot"
Pull in your free leg and squeeze down for your spin.  If I missed something, please let me know.

What makes matters worse for me is that back in March had MRI and was diagnosed with a brain abnormality and by doctors orders have to limit the amount of spins I perform during practice sessions.  I now I wear a headband with a protective cushion to avoid any brain injury - though its not that attractive - this will not stop me, however I am more cautious on the ice.  Though I've my share of falls - now I practice my sit spins 3x, camel 3x and scratch spin 3-5x that's it!!! for the day just to safe.

So, ladies and gentlemen, word of the wise!! keep doing your back spins -don't stop just because you tested and passed. Make it a routine to at least do a few back spins during each practice.

Where there is thunder and lighting at the end
the sunshine always comes through...

41 days and Counting "Update"

Adult Bronze Moves Test
July 9, 2012

It all came down to this decision today, between me and my coach!! What we concluded: that it would best to wait until the next test session.  This would allow me to have more time to prepare, practice and at the same time focus on moves.  In a way I am re-leaved that we came to this decision, even though it was one of my goals to get it done by August, but things happen and I will be honest, I am not ready yet.

I've been told that "well, if I passed the ISI tests- why test USFS its all the same".   This statement stands true, however, I like to test it gives me the opportunity to skate with better form, correctness and proper positions, edges, form and rotations. for example: If a judge writes"needs to improve in this area"  I take criticism as a good thing - makes me work harder. I always say "take the negative and turn it into a positive."

I will continue to test both ISI and USFS though I am getting the best of both worlds!! It gets kind of crazy when I am trying to get all my MIF/FS for USFS and at the same time trying to get my ISI Open Silver elements clean for next skating season.  Can someone please push the 'PAUSE BUTTON" and let me re-think this crazy madness.

Which brings me to my next chapter of my life "skating journey"!!
I've been thinking about not competing anymore.  Its something that I am strongly considering due to health and financial reasons, but my options are open.  My real goal and dream is to compete at a Adult Sectional or Adult National Competition.  For me its not about winning or getting a medal - just the simple fact that I made it thus far is good enough for me - oh, and of course, to take a photo with the USFS Logo backdrop.

On a short note:  I am not even sure if I am READY for this endeavor or not, that's why I have to test, push myself to achieve my goals.  Still going to continue testing with ISI and reach Gold level and work to land my double salcow (hoping next year) God willing !! then maybe in a not to distant future the possibility of  the "Teaching" route.

Endless Dreams and Forever Possibilities!!!

The Voice Within

I try to keep a positive attitude and mindset when it comes to skating and my daily life, I truly do.  Though I know what is expected of me as a mom, a wife and as a skater.  Sometimes there is a "Voice Within" that says "what are you doing with yourself". Yes, skating is a tough sport, and at my age it's even harder.  Deep down inside I know that I can do it - but my body tells me otherwise. With just a little more practice and positive encouragement, eventually it will all fall into place.

There are days that I feel  a sense of disappointment and/or the "not good enough" syndrome  within myself no matter what I do, no matter how hard I try - is it worth it?  Some days are good days but then there are the bad days.  It's a challenge for me because I want to please everyone, then again feel a sense of guilt inside (voice) for doing what makes me happy (skating) but at what cost.  Should I listen to the "voice" or fight it - though its tough - just go with the flow?  Not sure if anyone else, feels the same, if you do, please share...

Though I am not quite sure if its a normal thing, just a mid-life crisis or just a "voice" in my head playing mind games with me or the war of "Good vs Evil". Maybe just making something out of nothing!  That voice within I call it "my drunken monkey" and its one of my affirmations..."Don't listen to your drunken monkey"

Some of the things he likes to say:
  •  what am I doing?
  •  is this actually worth it?
  •  what are you trying to prove?
  •  you're not good enough.
  •  I can't do it.
  •  Its over - don't you see.

The voice within surely is not my inner spirit talking to me (I hope). My spirit is strong by the grace of God. Surely, this is part of my "Journey" one of many challenges I have to face and overcome. However, there is one thing I can definitely say is "I will never give UP" the mind is a "powerful" thing but rest assure it will never break me down.

Life is Bigger Than Self !!

Think I Need New Boots/Blades

When is the right time to get new boots and blades? That is my question of the day...

I only had two pairs of skates throughout the years.  When I first started skating, had a pair of Reidells beginners, then my second pair that I skate in now are Jackson Elite with an MK Paramount blade.  I am really thinking about purchasing new boots and blade, however, studying the cost.

When is it time to upgrade? Also, which is the best "brand" ? I really like my Jackson's but my coach wants me to get "Harlick"  I've checked around and Harlick's are out of my pricing range.  I am leaning towards "SP Terri's" - my daughter Christina has SP Terri's and she loves them and they did not cost that much either.

I am working on single jumps right now level ISI 4/5.  What I noticed recently is that every time I do my flip jump my foot tends to move inside my boot.  Also, how would I know when its time to change my blades, I've seen those blades that are like a light pink and light blue - are those for "higher" level skaters? Probably...

The part that I am dreading is breaking in the boots - I remember when I got my Jacksons, I didn't even want to wear them.  When I was younger, I played softball, we use to rub some vasaline on my glove to soften the leather, well I applied the same concept to my skates and "whala" it worked!! Its true! breaking in new boots  really take a while and very painful...

June 22, 2012
A friend of mine had mentioned to me that Jackson's is having a 50% off on Jackson's skates. This the best news ever and I am definitely upgrading to their Jackson Elite model and upgrading blades but still debating weather to get Matrix Blades.  This is a lifetime investment and will be my last pair for now for a longtime.

It's hard to let go of the "Old", but the "New" is always better...

My USFS Test Pass or Retry

Its Sunday testing day, and yes I am testing USFS Adult Pre-Bronze MIF and Free Skate.  I can't believe this day is actually here, it seemed like yesterday when I decided to test (February 2012).

My fate is in the hands of  1 to 3 judges who took their Sunday to sit on a cold ice rink and watch me skate!!  My Judge was so nice and made me feel comfortable.  I did have 2 other skaters on the ice, though I manage to pull it through.   The best thing of it all is that your test will be marked Pass or Retry as opposed to Pass or Fail.   I don't like the word "Fail" because no matter how young or old you are it is embed in our mind to go out there and do our very best and "failure is not an option, its a "choice" so, to say "retry" is a sense of relief for a short period of time.  What it means is that you did your best, however, you have to go back practice and test again, these tests are a good thing because this will teach you the correct positions, form etc and also respect the sport that we love so much!!  In a good note this testing is for Adult Pre-Bronze only, however, Bronze, Silver and Gold level testing is based by a points system.

PASSED!!!

Test in order:

Moves In The Field Adult Pre-Bronze Level III:
Perimeter Stroking: to be skated both directions
Basic Edges:  R/L Forward Outside/Inside Edges
                      R/L Backward Outside/Inside Edges
Consecutive Crossovers: Forward and Backwards
Waltz Eight:  Skate a figure Eight on the Ice w/right and left outside 3 turns
Spirals: Right and Left inside edge spirals

Free Skate Adult Pre-Bronze Level III
Jumps: Two different jumps either one-half or one full revolution
Spins: 1. one foot upright spin (3 rev) 2. Two foot upright Spin (3 rev)
Steps: 1. Crossovers - forward and backward (either direction)
          2. Lunge or Spiral

Though the above required elements seem like a "piece of cake" not so!! much is involved than just doing the elements, you have to have correct position and arms when doing your edges, right count for your waltz eight, correct entry for your spins, strong knee bends when stroking/cross overs etc. OH! did I mention that with all of this my legs were like Jello literally!! I was so nervous that I couldn't stop shaking.  While I was skating my Free Skate warm-up I did a flip jump instead of a 1/2 flip, "big no no" I did do the1/2 flip on my test though.

Word of the wise: I practice all my edges on the hockey line, however, when it was my time to skate my edges, I was told to skate on the center of the ice, due to other skaters skating same time with  me.  Yes, there are no lines on the center of the ice, eeekkk!!! I glanced at my coach with a shocked face!! took a deep breath and imagined my axis in my mind and did it!! The waiting for the results felt like an eternity but took one glance at the bottom and "Passed" with that I received great reviews: good edges, great crossovers, and carriage flow, body extensions :)

The experience was overwhelming to say the least.  Next in my agenda is practice, practice so I can test Bronze hopefully by this Fall.  This is a true journey for me, never thought I could actually do this and here I am with one step at a time, patience and a positive attitude, you can achieve your goals & dreams!!

Thank you so much Central Florida Figure Skating Club and USFSA for this wonderful opportunity!!

ISI Conference Champ. Recap

I had a an amazing time at the 2012 ISI Conference Championships at the RDV Sportsplex Ice Den

Let's Recap:
Two days of sleepless nights, the nerves is eating you alive and to make matters worse you have to skate in front of  4 judges and your fate is in their hands!!!!  Got the nerve and did it and finally its all over. Now I  can relax, re-coop and look at the videos and pictures and criticize all the mistakes and the "should of - would of" moments".

Despite my health and the loss of my Dad one month ago this weekend, this competition was a "Tribute".  I am proud of myself  for going out there and skate for him.

Artisitic - 2nd, Dramatic - 2nd and Open Silver 3rd
Adult Production Number - 1st.

Tribute to my Dad "Ave Maria" 2nd Place
Hats off to all the Adult Skaters who competed this weekend - you guys ROCK!!!! Let me just say this; "it doesn't matter what level you are, how old you are, the matter of the fact is that you got the courage and the will to face our fears and skate with our hearts" and the most important things is that we did it -YOU did it!

Open Silver 3rd
Best dress I've made by far!
All the practices, all the falls, injuries, tears and heartache - its all well worth it!  I said it before and say it again, this is a tough sport and it doesn't matter HOW you place, everyone is a "Winner" .

Special thanks to all the volunteers - everyone did a great job! couldn't have done it without you!

My next competition is Clearwater Championships June 15-17th but my biggest challenge is in two weeks testing USFS and I have to focus and hope to God that I pass.

Is Skating Costing Too Much?

In this economic times, its really gotten hard for families and their skater(s) to achieve their skating dreams!!  What has it come down to... do we go food shopping or pay a series to skate next week?  What sacrifices do parents like myself have to do?  I am self-employed business woman and its tough I have to say.   I skate and so does my daughter.  We both have the same coach and we skate 2x to 3x a week in a good week.

It is really difficult to just get those lessons in and the practice ice as well. what I decided to do is break up the lesson into two instead of each example: instead of doing one hour each, we are doing now hour split into 30/30.  Then we things get better, I will go back...but then comes the competitions and the holiday shows too.  Even though we want to participate, its just too much.  Also, are the testing sessions too that tend to run up a bill - if you fail the damn test, have to pay for it again until you pass it.  Not to mention the boots and blades, I have noticed that some parents are getting used boots/skates for their kids, not a bad idea. Then you have the outfits too, those prices out there are ridiculousness - that's why I design all mine and my daughters dresses.  We have to cut corners, one way or another - what ever it takes.

Is skating costing to much?"  I am just hanging in there, hoping things get better for myself and others.  Maybe I will win the lotto and buy a rink and all my friends can skate for free!!! hahaha funny!!!

In a good note: Lets budget ourselves, find ways to adjust our lifestyle to meet the demand, but please never give up your dreams, everything is possible.  With sacrifices comes SUCCESS !!!

Can I Skate Even Though...

Not sure if this is the correct title for this POST!  I love skating and its part of my life - but what happens when the person you love, who raised you to be the person you are today "Dies" is in heaven looking down at you?

On April 27th my dad passed away, we all were ready for this day but never knew it would happen so fast.   We had to postpone renewing our wedding vows (5/3/12) not to mention that I have an upcoming National Competition.  All changed in a split moment, my world turned upside down and my pain and sorrow is unbearable.  My dad was the best, he taught me to love the outdoors (fishing, hunting etc), live life and help others.  He was a great man.

Joannie Rochette 2010 Olympic Bronze Medalist, lost her mother 2 days before her short program at the Olympics, that must of been the worst anyone can endure - I can truly relate and I am pretty sure you all have have the same experience as well.  What do I do now?  Can I skate this competition even though I am mourning?  I asked my skating friends and all say the same "go for it" "skate in his honor"  all is right and good, but deep down, inside I am confused.  I don't want to seem SELFISH in any way.

I gave it a lot of thought and discussed it with my family - I decided to SKATE the Competition and will skate my "Ave Maria" one more time, I retired this program last year when I skated in honor of my Hubby who had a heart attack almost died, and I had to withdrew at Adult Nationals, but I did win the best prize of all "Life" God save my hubby.  This Competition will be a "Tribute" to my dad - he never saw me skate in person, but did see my videos though.  He will be smiling down at me - at least he wont freeze in the rink, hehehe...

Special thanks to all my friends near and far for all your support and prayers, love you very much!! You know who you are..

Competition Time

Yes!!
Its that time again, my first competition of the "Year" Yippy!!  I will be competing a National competition the 2012 ISI Conference Championships at my home rink, RDV Sportsplex Ice Den.

I will be competing at Open Silver (my first time) - my moves and technical needs work, although I am working hard but for the past couple of weeks I was banned from the rink for health reasons. Being out for so long, will take some time to recoup. Yesterday!! I got the OKAY to skate!!! Awesomeness!!! I have to take it easy, slowly but surely. I will take it one day at a time, one jump, one spin at a time, there is no rush.

I have 1/2 of my technical program completed, this Thursday, will work on the final 1/2 as well as my 16 dance step sequence.  Have to work on combination jumps, (no axels yet) and my spins.  Hopefully, my coach will work on my Artistic program next week.  My goal is to get all my programs done by end of March, so then I can focus on the last two months on perfecting my programs.

My favorite part of the competition is the skating dresses, of course can't have a wonderful program without fantastic dress!! I already designed it, just have to get the fabric and start the sewing madness!!  This is the best part of the whole competition thing, is the sewing, the bling and the make-up!!  I will post the dresses as soon as I put it together.

The Test

Watching the Prudential Figure Skating Championships completely inspired me just watching all those amazing skaters. I heard the story from Ashley Wanger, the Gold Medal Winner and I said to myself  "self"  I would love to do that one day - so after thinking about it and with the support of my family, I've decided to give it a try and test USFS. I would love to go and compete at Adult Sectionals or Adult Nationals one day.

I have a terrible phobia just the thought of "TEST" gives me the "ibby jibbies" I've been putting it off every year I've been skating.  I have tested ISI and right now my level is ISI FS Silver.  To be quite honest I feel now I am ready for USFS- technically, mentally!  Have to go back to the drawing board and get my MIF and Free Skate from beginner to high level this will be a challenge - we are talking major leagues here people.

I should've done this (tested) earlier on when I first started skating, but can't move back the clock.  I have a wonderful support group and will seek guidance from all my skating friends - which I am sure will have tons of questions.  This is the test format:  Adult Pre-Bronze Level III, Bronze, Silver and my goal is to rich GOLD level but we'll see - remember I am not no spring chicken.  Things tend to be a whole lot different at my age, but lets hope for the best.  One test, one level at a time!!   Wish me luck!!

The Aches and Pains

It seems that at my age skating has its challenges and there's the injuries as well as  the "aches and pains" from it.  Boy!! have I had my share of falls !!  Even though I stretch and also do off ice practice and drink plenty of water still.  My pains very week to week, sometimes I don't get any at all on a good day.  However, where I get the most pain are my ankles, shoulder, thighs and the worst my back. I cant explain it or its just the simple fact that "yes" I am getting old and skating is a tough sport, but I still push myself to the brink of collapse.

For the past couple of years I've been taking acupuncture treatment for a back injury (non-skating related) in 2005 with two bulging disc L4 and L5, very, very painful I might add.   I been through doctors, cortozone shots, steroids etc. nothing helped.  I did find, however, the relief I so needed - without this treatment I could've have never skated.  Acupuncture is the only treatment that works for me.

What I also found out is that inflammation happens all over your body - not just your bones and/or muscles, but other areas of your body too.  I came across a anti-inflammation capsule that really works great and the best thing is that it's all "natural"  I've been taking it for two years now and it works for my pains, even though I take Motrin which helps too but this helps my inflammation heal faster.  Its called IF Relief from Nature's Sunshine.

On a quick note: Don't give up too soon because you feel pain, seek help and relief where you and your body feels comfortable.  Everyone can seek relief without subjecting your body to harsh medication - alternative medicine works just the same.

Live "Today" like tomorrow is your "Last"

A Positive Mindset

I have a tendency of thinking negative at times, I must admit.  But what is "positive mindset" its your self-esteem and self-confidence that fuels your mind and your thoughts. You'll be surprised how many times we say negative things on a daily basis, its very alarming.  If you just say something positive everyday, it will change your whole mindset.

"I hate the way I look today"
 "I cant do it"
" I am not good at anything"

A positive mindset is the power of positive thinking. It is directly connected to the ability to remove, control or eliminate negative thoughts.  Get rid of all your negative thoughts, doubt, fear, worry and focus on positive thoughts.

"I know I can do it"
"I will be rich one day"
"I can do anything I set my mind to"

I like to write down affirmations and read it on a daily basis.  My favorite affirmation is "What you say today is what you become tomorrow"  What that means is "If you say I don't have, everyday" for example, you will never have.  "Don't listen to your drunken monkey"  Saying and repeating your affirmations regularly will clear your mind and thoughts.

Same goes with your everyday work, excersice and/or sports - surrounding yourself in a positive environment plays an important role to your positive mindset too.  Hangout with positive people who will lift, encourage, and be there for you in good times and in bad.

With a positive mindset you can create a better life, enjoy greater success, happiness and enjoy more of the things you want, while getting rid of the negative aspects of your life.

Failure is not an Option:

Though we are hard on our kids to (for those of you who have kids) get good grades, win in sports, get into the best college etc.  There is a question, that I ask myself "are we setting our kids up for failure?"  That is the questions, or is it a teaching that is embedded in us to pass on.

In skating, "failure" for me is not an option.  I think its simply the fact that my parents embedded this in me to be the best at what ever I set my mind to.  They actually prepared me not to "fail" rather than failure itself.

My mom once told me "make a list and divide in two on one side write down all the things you are good at or have succeed in and the other side write down the things that you are not so good at.  Take a good look and ask yourself  "why am I so much better here than over there?"  You only focused on what you're good at because it was easier for you - instead of focusing harder on what you're not so good at by "choice"

This concept has helped me be successful in my business and in my skating.  I wanted to share this with you. So, make your list and begin from there - be the best and use this concept not just in sports but in business, school, church or at work etc.  Its not because you can't, it's the fear of "failure".  Anyone can fail - just get up and brush yourself off and start over, its your life and you CAN do it, because..

Failure is not an "Option" its a "Choice"
